The Leonberger originates from Schwaben. The breed exists since 1846. Cradle: Leonberg. There are two typical Swchabish dog breeds: the Rottweiler and the Leonberger. Both thank their existence to two little towns in Schwaben: Rottweil and Leoberg.

Sir Essig lived in Leonberg from 1808 until 1889 as alderman of the town and big animal lover. Of course he owned several dogs of a lot of different breeds for those days. Among them Great Danes and the well-known and most preciousNewfoundlanders, whole- and stained colored, like an old picture shows. After many breeding's with the yellow-colored Saint Bernard and the Landseer, he later cross-breeds the result with the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. In 1846, he first showed his Leonbergers as a new breed.

It was – and still is – an impressive big dog like the Newfoundlander, with its vigilance, goodness and of course its preference for water.
